Written between 1977 and 1978, the opera stimulated the interest of the international musical world as it represented an interesting and significant model of the new way of conceiving musical theatre.

A chamber opera in twelve scenes with a libretto based on Georg Büchner’s novella, it reconstructed the last years of the troubled life of Jakob Lenz, one of the great precursors of Romanticism in the classical age, who was born in Latvia in 1751 and died in Moscow on 23rd May 1792, killed by his schizophrenia.

His entire existence was characterised by serious mental health problems that gradually worsened over the years until he drowned in his delirium.

In Torre del Lago the play will be staged in the Auditorium Enrico Caruso on 20 July 2022 in a production realised in collaboration with the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala and under the direction of Marco Angius, directedby Cesare Scarton.
